Captain Beefheart, also known as Don Van Vliet ’cause that was his real name, passed away today. Since the moment I heard My Human Gets My Blues for the first time, I’ve been a not-too-fanatic-but quite-devoted Captain Beefheart fan. I know that people have the tendency to say such things when an artist passes away or outs himself as gay (works the other way around for people outing themselves as zoophile or fungal infection victim, by the way) but in this case, it’s true.

His music may sometimes have sound like a three-year old going nuts on his mother’s kitchenware after smoking two packs of Gauloises, but it was and will always be fucking great. To prove that and because I like to make lists, I’ve picked five of my favorite Captain Beefheart songs.
